Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Portion Monitor does with your information. It covers the Android app published on Google Play under the package name com.portionMonitor.app, in every language it ships in.

The short version. Your diary, goals, reminders and profile are stored on your phone. If you turn on Google Drive backup, your diary and settings are also sent to your own Google account. No server of ours receives any of it. Google serves ads, reports crashes and provides aggregate usage figures; those services never receive what you log.

What the app stores on your device

All of the following is written to private storage on your phone and is not transmitted to us:

BMI, the healthy weight range and the body fat estimate shown in Reports are calculated on the device from these numbers and are not stored anywhere else.

Google Drive backup (optional)

If you connect a Google account under Settings → Backup and restore, the app copies your diary and settings to that account's Google Drive, in the private application-data folder that only this app can read. You choose manual or scheduled backups. Transfers use HTTPS; the app does not add encryption of its own on top of Google's. We do not have access to your Drive or to the backups. Restoring replaces the diary and settings on the phone, after the app has saved a local recovery copy. Backups stay in Drive until you remove them through Drive's application management, or disconnect the account in the app.

Files the app writes when you ask it to

Images. When you save a day or a report as a picture, it is written to your device's Pictures folder in an album named "Portion Monitor". Sharing it hands the image to the app you choose.
CSV exports. When you export your data it is written to your Downloads folder. The file contains everything you have logged and stays on your device unless you share it.
Shared setup links. If you share your goals, reminders and units with someone, they travel inside the link itself. The link is created and read on the phone; our website never receives its contents.

Advertising

The app is free and shows ads supplied by Google AdMob: a banner on some screens, a full-screen ad after saving a day and occasionally when the app returns to the foreground, and an optional rewarded ad you can choose to watch before an export. To serve them, Google's advertising SDK collects information from your device, which may include the advertising identifier, IP address, device and operating system details, and information about the ads you see and interact with. This is handled by Google, not by us, and is governed by Google's privacy policy and its terms for partner sites and apps.

We never send your diary, profile details or any other content you enter to the ad network. Ads are not targeted using anything you record in the app.

Your ad choices

Settings → About → Ad privacy choices inside the app is the one place to manage this. What it opens depends on where you are:

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the app asks for your consent before personalised ads are served, using Google's User Messaging Platform. This option reopens that form so you can change or withdraw your choice at any time.
Everywhere else, no consent form applies, so this option opens your device's own advertising settings, where you can reset your advertising identifier or delete it so apps can no longer use it.

Permissions the app uses

Permission	Why
Internet and network state	To load ads and, if you turn it on, to reach Google Drive. Everything else works offline.
Notifications	For the reminders you set, and to tell you when a data export has finished. You are asked when you first turn on a reminder or export; the app works whether or not you allow it, but reminders cannot appear without it.
Run at start-up	To re-arm your reminders after the phone restarts. Alarms do not survive a reboot on their own.
Advertising ID	Used by Google's advertising SDK, as described above.

Reminders use ordinary alarms and may arrive a few minutes after the time you set; the app does not request the exact-alarm permission. It does not request access to your camera, microphone, contacts, location, calendar, call logs, step sensors or health data: steps and exercise are numbers you type in.

Crash reports and usage analytics

The app uses two Google services to tell us when it breaks and how it is used. Neither has access to what you log.

Service	What it collects
Firebase Crashlytics	When the app crashes: the stack trace, the device model and operating system version, how much memory and storage was free, and a random identifier for the installation. Never your entries, profile or files.
Google Analytics for Firebase	Aggregate usage: which screens and features are used, session length, app version, device model and coarse region, tied to a random app instance identifier. It records that a day was saved or a goal was set, never what the values were. Events are designed so that no number or name you type is ever included.

Both are operated by Google and governed by Firebase's privacy documentation. The identifiers they use are specific to this installation and are reset if you reinstall the app or clear its data. We use this only to fix crashes and understand which parts of the app are worth improving.

Children

Portion Monitor is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Keeping and deleting your data

Your entries remain on your device until you delete them. Uninstalling the app removes the database and all app settings. Files you have exported or saved to your gallery are yours and are not removed by uninstalling, so delete those separately if you want them gone. Google Drive backups remain in your Drive until you remove them.

Because we never receive your data, there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf. For a copy of everything the app holds, use Settings → Data → Export as CSV.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revised version is posted on this page with a new date at the top.
